For runners torn between taking an evening jog along Fort Lauderdale beach or sipping a cold beer and enjoying an ocean breeze, there is a solution: Do both.
A new Thursday evening run begins at Running Wild on Sunrise Boulevard, traverses along State Road A1A and concludes 3.1 miles later at the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort. Fruit, snacks and a keg of beer await at the hotel’s poolside bar.
The first runs, on April 30 and May 7, each drew about 30 participants, who covered the distance in 25 to 40 minutes. So far, most of the runners have been followers of Running Wild’s Facebook page, Westin hotel guests looking for a workout or hotel employees.
“After a run, you can really appreciate a nice, cold beer, and that’s why I do it,” says Blake Crawford, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing.
Hotel general manager Bruce Roy got the idea for the run after stopping into Running Wild to buy shoes and chatting with store owner Don Wennerstrom. For the run, a Westin van transports hotel guests to and from the store.
The beer comes from Oakland Park brewery Funky Buddha, and Westin staffers provide fruit, snacks and water.
The run begins 6:30p.m. Thursdays at Running Wild, 2563 E. Sunrise Blvd., in Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-565-9400.
